Drug-Free Workplace is a Better Workplace
What is a “drug free workplace?” Such an environment refers to a workplace setting where alcohol and drug use are discouraged and other activities are provided instead. Employees who sell drugs and alcohol on work premises or come to work impaired do not contribute to a friendly or effective workplace environment. So why do we always say that a drug-free workplace is a better workplace?
1. You are losing money
Businesses are losing over $100 billion per year due to substance abuse in the workplace, and an estimated 6.2 percent of full-time employees are risky users of alcohol. That 6.2 percent are more likely to have skipped one more days of work each month than those who lead substance-free lifestyles.
2. Save a Life
To add to the figures above, up to 40 percent of industrial fatalities are 47 percent of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol consumption and dependence. Providing your employees with alcohol and drug education may also save their lives, if not improve the quality of life for them.
3. Safer Work Environment
While the figures above directly affect your business’s output and efficiency, they also negatively impact the community in which you and your colleagues spend large portions of your days. It is important that the workplace provides a safe and inclusive environment, not one that may be full of distractions or disrespect. The last thing any business needs is an internal conflict that may lead to a lawsuit or charges of harassment.
4. Decrease Turnover
Employers always do their best to evaluate applicants as fairly as possible, but with the introduction of a drug-free workplace, you will reduce the likelihood of hiring employees with drug problems. This will decrease absenteeism and increase productivity which should also result in decreased turnover.
5. Public Image
For businesses who deal with hospitality or the public, qualities such as courtesy and kindness are valued in representing the overall image of the business. Employees who come to work under the influence are less likely to exude these traits and may have impaired judgment.
