Prescription Drug Abuse is an Epidemic
Prescription Drug Abuse is an Epidemic in today’s society. Too often, people are taking drugs that are not prescribed for them, and consuming excessive doses. Due to the fact that doctors administer these medications, they are not perceived as being “as harmful” as other drugs. In reality, health complications and addiction can occur as a result of abusing these drugs.
Here is a list of commonly abused prescription drugs:
Xanax
When prescribed by a doctor, Xanax is used to treat panic disorders, insomnia, and types of anxiety. The drug is a central nervous system depressant, causing a calming, sedative effect. Xanax can lead to lack of coordination, slurred speech, confusion, disorientation, and memory impairment.
Narcotic Syrups
Prescription cough syrups contain codeine and hydrocodone, which are opioids. This drug causes a relaxing effect, with consequences such as respiratory problems and alteration of brain functioning. Rap songs sometimes refer to this “Purple Drank”, which has been linked to a number of lethal accidents.
Ambien
Doctors prescribe this drug to treat insomnia due to its sedative effects. Continuous abuse of this drug can lead to serious implications including depression, amnesia, and behavioral changes. Withdrawal from the drug can be accompanied by panic attacks and psychosis.
Adderall
This stimulant is prescribed to treat the symptoms of ADHD. Due to its ability to focus concentration, adderall is often abused by students. Adderall dependency and addiction can lead to serious long term effects, such as cardiovascular issues and strokes.
OxyContin
This narcotic pain reliever is prescribed in cases of moderate to severe pain. This drug is so widely abused due to its high content of the opioid oxycodone. Like those who abuse Narcotic Syrups, OxyContin abusers run the risk of respiratory failure and changes in brain functioning.
Overdose is a very serious reality, which has been the cause of death in an alarming number of cases. The popularity of abusing prescription drugs is alarming. The severity of the effects have been documented, yet, the problem is labeled an epidemic.
